Business shipment or personal items: why they are different services and how not to mix them up

“I saw that you can send things by bus to Europe for €2–3 per kilo without any customs — why is yours different?” We hear this question regularly. The answer is simple: these are two entirely different services for different purposes, and mixing them up for business shipments is risky.

For commercial cargo, SEMERO's licensed customs broker for business is available.

Bus delivery of personal items: what it actually is

Services that transport personal items by bus (suitcases, bags, personal parcels between people) are shared cargo on passenger or freight bus routes, oriented toward private, non-commercial shipments: gifts, personal belongings, small batches 'for yourself'. A tariff of around €2–3 per kilo looks attractive, and formally 'without customs' — because these are personal-use items within the limits that don't require declaring them as commercial cargo.

Why this format doesn't suit business

When it comes to goods for resale, samples for a company or regular supply batches, this is commercial cargo, not personal items. Using a passenger or 'grey' bus channel for such cargo carries real risks:

  • No official customs clearance. Commercial cargo that crossed the border without proper declaration is not a 'saving on customs' but a violation that can lead to confiscation or fines.
  • No documentary proof. For business it is critical to have official documents for the shipment — an invoice, a customs declaration — for accounting, taxation and work with suppliers.
  • No tracking or insurance. If the cargo is lost or damaged, no one bears responsibility.
  • Weight and goods type limits that are not always transparently stated.

How official business delivery works with SEMERO

  • Courier to the address — the cargo is collected directly from the supplier, without taking it to a terminal yourself.
  • Customs clearance under our own licence — an official declaration, duty calculation if needed, a full package of documents for business.
  • Document checks in advance — the invoice and goods description are verified before the shipment even starts.
  • Online cargo tracking at every stage.
  • Work with leading carriers (FedEx, UPS, DHL and others) — cargo from small samples (5–10 kg) to batches of up to 70 kg.

Yes, the cost will be higher than 'a bus without customs' — but this is the cost of a legal, documented and insured supply that you can build business processes on, not a one-off saving with an unpredictable result.

When each option makes sense

If it's about personal items or a gift for family, a bus service can be a reasonable choice. If it's about goods for a company, supplier samples or regular supplies, this is the domain of official customs-regulated courier delivery.

SEMERO is your agent for international delivery for business: from booking a courier with leading carriers (FedEx, UPS, DHL and others) to customs clearance under our own licence.
